ANC says Chikane mayoral list omission was a mistake

Waqar Durrani·September 9, 2026·2 min read

The African National Congress (ANC) has described the omission of a prominent figure, Chikane, from its mayoral candidate list as a mistake, according to TimesLIVE. Party Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula reportedly explained the exclusion was not intentional.

TimesLIVE reports that Mbalula addressed the matter publicly, attributing Chikane's absence from the list to an administrative error. The clarification comes after the list's publication sparked questions about the party's candidate selection process ahead of upcoming municipal elections.

The ANC's handling of its candidate lists has drawn scrutiny, with other outlets covering related procedural concerns. News24 has examined the distinction between lists being "captured" and "submitted," noting the party has offered no clarification on the terminology. Daily Maverick has separately questioned whether the Electoral Commission should relax its rules when political parties fail to meet compliance standards.

Mbalula has also faced pressure over the broader list controversy, but he has stated he will not resign unless the ANC directs him to do so, as reported by the Mail & Guardian. The party's internal processes and its communication around candidate selection remain under public observation.

The focus now shifts to whether the ANC will formally correct the list to include Chikane and how the Electoral Commission will respond to any revised submission. The party's next steps will determine whether this incident remains a minor administrative issue or escalates into a larger political challenge.
